Adhering to the fine tradition of "Establishing Careers in Danzhou, Taking Root in Hainan Island" and implementing the educational philosophy of "Cultivating Virtue, Clarifying Aspirations, Seeking Truth, and Practicing Pragmatism," School of Materials Science and Engineering (SMSE) is committed to nurturing high-quality professionals with patriotic dedication, innovative spirit, solid knowledge, strong practical capabilities, and well-rounded development in moral, intellectual, physical, aesthetic, and labor education. These talents meet the needs of socialist modernization with Chinese characteristics and have made outstanding contributions to national major engineering projects and economic development. SMSE has cultivated numerous outstanding talents in materials science, providing both human resources and technical support for Hainan's deepened reform and the construction of the Free Trade Port with Chinese characteristics.
SMSE boasts over 10 national and provincial-level teaching and research platforms, including: National Key Laboratory of Tropical Marine Engineering Materials and Evaluation, State Key Laboratory of Marine Resource Utilization in the South China Sea (co-constructed), Provincial-Ministerial Co-constructed Collaborative Innovation Center for Natural Rubber, Key Laboratory of Advanced Materials for Tropical Island Resources (MOE), Hainan Provincial Key Laboratory of Comprehensive Development and Utilization of Silica-Zirconium-Titanium Resources, Hainan Provincial Key Laboratory of Specialty Glass, and Hainan Collaborative Innovation Center for Advanced Utilization of High-Quality Silica Resources and Specialty Glass.
SMSE currently has 109 faculty members, including 99 full-time teachers. Among them, 32 hold senior professional titles, 42 hold associate senior titles, and 96 possess doctoral degrees. The materials science and engineering discipline includes 7 national-level high-level talents, 4 flexibly introduced national-level experts, 1 recipient of the National Science and Technology Progress Award (First Class), and 61 doctoral supervisors. Over the past five years, SMSE has secured nearly 300 research projects, including National Key R&D Programs, Key Projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, Major Research Instrument Development Projects, Joint Fund Projects (Key Support), and Hainan Major Science and Technology Programs, with total funding exceeding 130 million RMB. Faculty members have published over 800 SCI-indexed papers, including more than 80 in top-tier journals such as Nat. Commun., Angew. Chemie, and Adv. Mater., and have obtained more than 150 authorized invention patents. SMSE has also received over 10 provincial awards, including the Hainan Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award (First Class).
SMSE offers 1 Hainan Provincial Outstanding Teaching Team, 1 provincial-level elite course, and 4 Hainan University elite courses. It has established advanced specialized programs such as the "Hainan University Materials Science and Engineering Science Experimental Class" and the "Ministry of Education Pilot Class for Outstanding Engineers in Polymer Materials and Engineering." A distinctive "Bachelor-Master-PhD" talent cultivation model has been developed, emphasizing disciplinary uniqueness, diversified approaches, individualized education, and innovation/practice capabilities. SMSE actively engages in global collaborations, maintaining close research partnerships with institutions like the U.S. DOE Ames National Laboratory and the University of Cambridge. It has also signed agreements with over 10 domestic enterprises to establish "Joint Engineering Practice Education Centers," providing robust support for enhancing academic and engineering innovation capabilities.
With integrated "Bachelor-Master-PhD" training capacity, SMSE has achieved outstanding graduate outcomes. In 2022, 45% of undergraduates pursued further studies, with 88% admitted to top institutions such as Fudan University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, and Chinese Academy of Sciences institutes. In 2023, the undergraduate advancement rate reached 49.51%, with a graduate employment rate of 95.37%. In 2024, the advancement rate stood at 45.64%, accompanied by a 98.14% employment rate. As a leading institution in central and western China, SMSE annually recommends approximately 2 outstanding graduate students for fully funded doctoral studies abroad through exclusive government scholarships. Beyond academic advancement, major employers of undergraduates include China Petrochemical Corporation (Sinopec Group), China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC), China State Railway Group Co., Ltd. (CR), China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC), BOE Technology Group Co., Ltd. (BOE), and Hon Hai Technology Group (Foxconn), maintaining an employment rate consistently above 95%, ranking among the highest at the university.
